Does anyone know of any good tools to detect and decrypt Steganographic files?

Stegdetect and jphide are free and seem to work well.

Spyguy,

Are you asking in reference to a case? If so, was there something specific that led you to believe that stego software was used? If so, what was it?

What are the carrier images? JPGs? MPGs? WAVs?

Do you have some idea of the stego software used?

Also, what operating system are you interested in these tools running on?

I ask, b/c it's my understanding that stego cannot necessarily be detected outright. Several years ago, Niels Provos wrote a paper showing how tools could be written such that if the stego algorithm and methodology were known, one could determine a probability that an image had been stego'd; ie, that the image you are looking at on your screen is a carrier image.

As far has hiding and decrypting there are a bunch of free tools, like jsteg, and jphide that was mentioned before.

And if you're really interested in the stuff.

EDIT Oh yeah…everything KeyDet89 said X2. Jpeg, Mpeg, you running a linux platform/windows? Are you trying to find out what are the tools' short commings so you can hide data no one can find?? More details are needed then just a query.

Thanks everyone for your reply's. Fortunately this is not case related. This is something a friend of mine brought up in a conversation regarding the TV show Numbers. Apparently this was the subject of one of the episodes where a image actually stored another image inside of it. I told him I would see what info I could find on it. In my Internet searches I didn't find much regarding the discovery or decryption of this kind of data.

Spyguy this may be a little late, but if your interested go to http//www.snapfiles.com/get/stools.html and download the s-tools program. With it you can hide text/data in jpgs etc. It really is amazing to see how this works. Makes you really wonder what is in some of the pictures you see on the web etc…..
