Does anyone know how to map to an FTP remote drive using Windows XP? Because if this can be done, it would allow the acquisition of a device to a remote FTP share.

Andy,

I don't think you can actually "map" to an "FTP share"…FTP and shares are two entirely different things. Different protocols. FTP != CIFS/SMB.

Now, could someone write an Explorer-style, drop-and-drag interface that would allow you to have the same functionality as a mapped drive? Sure. But why bother?

Though as much. I did find one solution. Webdrive http://www.webdrive.com - this allows you to map to an FTP share. Just tried it and it works, it allowed me to image a small USB thumb drive to an FTP share. Not really of any use as I've only got 250MB of FTP /webspace.

I just wanted to see if it would work 🙂

I did some research on backup services like WebDrive about a year ago. As effective as they are in some situations, the terminology is still incorrect…one cannot "map" a drive via FTP. I know the terms are used that way in the marketing literature, but that's marketing literature.

Harlan - thanks for your slight rebuke. I might have gone on using that terminology in public.

Silly me 😳
