Can anybody tell me what the current 'phase' of UMTS is and which technical specification bears the details of it?

Thanks in advance

Colin

Have a look at UMTS evolution in 3GPP TR 21.902 - Release 9

Greg,

Thanks for that, exactly what I was looking for.

Is there a similar GSM phase related document, I'm particularly interested in the specific functionality which was adopted at each stage.

Regards,

Colin

BTW - I realised I didn't put an the extra link that gives you the position "at a glance" relating to 3G http//3gpp.org/releases

Here is another "at a glance" (huge file!!!) info that is very useful that identifies the status of standards including GSM specs (half way down the page) http//www.3gpp.org/ftp/Specs/html-info/status-report.htm

Long before the above info was made available by way of the interent I prepared documents for SIM up to release 97 and GSM up to Phase 2+, but I am guilty of not keeping them up todate. I am happy to email to you a copy if you want?

Basically

Phase 1 standards were frozen from Oct 1995
Phase 2 in general is often referred to as 1996
Phase 2+ plus are a series of releases R96, R97, R98 and R99

If you follow the link http//3gpp.org/specification-numbering the three columns on the specs page illustrates quite well the developed standards that relates to GSM, transition to 3G and 3G. The latter two still involves GSM due to 3G interfacing and handing over voice and data calls to GSM network (which also includes GPRS) and of course the other way

3G-2G & 2G-3G

Greg,

Thanks again, the second link posted is very helpful also. I had been using a different spec page on the 3gpp site however it was not clear what was the current release of any of the documents until you drilled down into them. This new link will make my life a lot easier.

I would very much appreciate if you would email me a copy of the documents you have mentioned.

I wonder if you could explain something else to me with regards to the 'freeze dates' and how you ascertained this information? I have looked as an example at 11.11 at this location http//www.3gpp.org/ftp/Specs/html-info/1111.htm and the freeze dates are different to what you have stated. I am wondering if I am missing something?

thanks for your time in answering these questions.

Colin

Colin,

You are nearly there and just need to tweek your understanding very slightly. R99 was the last GSM Release for Phase 2+, albeit it, like other standards, each Release (R96, R97, R98, R99) can be updated. As you can see (from the link you provided for GSM11.11) R99 has not been superceded but was last updated in 2007 but there is no other releases beyond R99 - eg R2000 or something else after R99. Therefore the timescales for introducing Phases and Releases are generally those quoted by source when the Phase or Release ended/came about.

If you want to get into this more, you may also want to look carefully at the transition of standards preparation from GSM to ETSI to 3GPP.

I will send an email to you.

Cheers
Greg

Greg,

Thanks for the email and the explanation about the freeze dates etc.

With regards to the transition of standards preparation this is something I am finding quite confusing and trying to understand better.

Looking more at 11.11, well at least beginning there. There is a descendant TS of 51.011 which appears at a glance to be mostly similar content but is a more recent release. Does this document supersede 11.11 now? If so then why has 11.11 been updated more recently and why is it even updated at all at this point? I'm not sure if I am missing something, but I probably am! The more I look at the standards the more of a mine field it seems to become! Perhaps you could explain further?

Regards,

Colin

Colin,

There are combination of events you need to understand to deal with the queries you now raise.

Your original query was about UMTS and you wanted a UMTS standard regarding UMTS standards evolution which led to suggesting to you to also browse http//www.3gpp.org/Specification-Numbering in order to assist you understand where GSM begins and ends regarding standards.

On that page for the weblink provided to you if you peruse the whole page it has information and links to help you understand the historical perspective under the heading "Yet more information"

http//www.3gpp.org/releases (this is given in my earlier comment)
http//www.3gpp.org/Historical-Specification

I hope that helps
Cheers
Greg
