Have any current or former LEOs started their own digital forensics business while still employed by their agency?

I've been doing forensics now for only a few years for my agency and really enjoy it. I'm finding there is a great need in the civil sector for DF professionals, too. The problem is that my department declined my request for outside employment (starting my own business). The bosses say that me running a private DF business violates our department's general order that outside work cannot be investigative in nature. Reluctantly I see their point, and I'm trying to find a way to alter my proposal so that it does not conflict with the rules and gives my bosses a reason to approve.

Has anyone faced something similar? If so, how did you go about resolving the conflict? I've searched this forum and elsewhere on the Internet but haven't found a possible resolution. I'd appreciate anyone's feedback.

(For what it's worth, I have a little more than 8 years until retirement. Leaving early scares me because of how little my pension will be now that I have a family, but waiting means I will be seriously out of touch with technology by the time I can start.)

Thanks!

Going against the general orders of your department is probably a career limiting move which would certainly impact your pension.

While in theory working civil cases "should" be fine, it would only be fine until one turns criminal.

Take the next eight years and continue working DF cases for your department, get them to send you to as much training as you can, build a portfolio of stellar work on cases, retire, join the civilian workforce.

Ah, if only it were that easy. I will have to leave my current spot in a year due to my department's policy to rotate members through. Thank you for the advice.
