I was a Windows user for a long time, but now primarily a Mac user. Many of my videos are still .wmv and as many of you will know this will not play on Mac. This was not an issue for a long time as you can just use one of the multi video player programs downloaded separately to play them, but now I want to do some editing in Final Cut Pro and .wmv just plainly is not compatible.
I've tried using some of those sites that convert video formats with terrible results - for example a 100MB .wmv file becomes a 2GB .mp4 file and when you play it is much worse quality.
Not sure what the problem behind this is, but is there any efficient way of converting video formats? .MP4 is my desired result in comparably sized files of comparable quality - is this possible?

I had some success with AKME FFMPEG on sourceforge
You probably want a MP4 encoder with H.264 support.
I'm not 100% sure but i think FFMpeg is what you want, like others have suggested.
