I am looking for any recommendations for a mobile device inventory.

I work as a security specialist for the university. Forensic investigations utilize Guidance (Opentext) Endpoint Investigator and Mobile Device Investigator to acquire and review data. We are pretty new at mobile device investigations, and work with an (always) limited budget. I'd like to obtain a few devices to be used for training and testing. I could not, nor would I want to try to keep every make/model of android, iOS.. device around so I'd like to have some recommendations of a few devices that would provide platforms that we could update to keep current with the market?
Any advice is much appreciated.

Respectfully,
David

I think there's value in identifying the devices that you would be likely conducting analysis on. If that includes ZTE, Apple, Samsung, Oppo, etc, then acquire a few of those for your device library. A lot of base Android implementations behave in the same way, whereas ZTE and Oppo variants have a few nuances that a good analyst should be aware of.

TL;DR - 1 x iOS, 1 x base Android (newish Samsung), 2 x cheap phones (ZTE/OPPO)

If you work for a university, check with the university library or the campus police department and see if you can obtain their lost and found phones after a certain period of time. I know when I worked at a university, the PD would give me the phones after 90 days of the phones sitting at the front desk. I'd turn them into training phones at that point and built up quite an inventory. People are always losing phones on campus and turning them into local lost and founds. Even check with libraries off campus and see if you can tap into those potential resources. Get creative with where lost phones would normally be turned into and ask. Worst they can say is no!

Hmmm.

I would say "queer" policy, was that the US, right?
