Is there a free open source/ free tool to preserve an image (E01) from a mobile phone?

Appreciate it if you can give some thoughts on how to do this.

Typically, E01 format image files are not used with mobile devices, unless you are conducting a chip-off or acquiring a MicroSD card, which doesn't appear to be the case.

I don't think there are any open source tools like Cellebrite, Axiom, or Oxygen that can preserve mobile data. However, if you know what you are doing there are free applications and utilities out there that can be used to pull data from Android and iOS devices, but I don't recommend doing this unless you are an experienced professional within mobile forensics.

Based on your question, I would find someone with expertise with mobile device acquisitions to assist you to avoid unintentionally harming the evidence. Can you provide any additional context on your situation?

For iOS devices, use iTunes to create a password protected Mobil Backup.

Take meticulous screenshots of each step of the iTunes Mobile Backup generation process and combine all of the screenshots into a “forensic collection report”.

Take photos of the iOS device’s serial number, IMEI number, etc. which can be found in the iOS device Settings > General > About menu.

Include the aforementioned photos in your “forensic collection report”.

For Android devices, research Rooting methods for specific models (test Rooting on the same model Android phone, not the original evidence).

Once rooted, Android phones can then be imaged using commands over ADB using such tools as DEFT Linux.

DEFT's manual can be found here (Rooting and Imaging on P.75) https://paper.bobylive.com/System/EN-deft7.pdf

Magnet Acquire has a “free to use” license I believe that is also a good option for generating Android and iOS phone images.

I strongly recommend testing the aforementioned techniques on your own phone or a cheaply purchased no-contract phone.
