Been awhile since I posted here, but started a new job eight months ago and have overlapped into technical investigations which I am really enjoying. I've always planned to get a Masters as I would like to teach and to further my education in general. My undergrad is in Computing and Security Technology and I've taken courses in forensics, incident response, networking, ethical hacking, etc. The issue is I've hit a bit of a dilemma. My job as it stands now is just about 50/50 technical and policy/regulation.

Having spoken to investigators and in networking with law enforcement professionals most say that having the technical skills/education is the important part. Anyone can learn the law and the procedures related to technical investigations and forensics, but knowing the technology is the hard part. But when you look at the backgrounds of the people doing the job you find they have degrees in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, and the like.

Thus my question is do you go with a MS in Information Assurance/Digitial Forensics or a Masters in Public Administration? I've found an MPA program with a specialization in investigations which I believe could fit the bill nicely. Also, I find that when sitting in meetings with those who have either been in law enforcement for sometime or have the legal training I'm the one who is usually behind. As in if I explain the technology they have no trouble with the legal procedures that should be followed.

Also, it appears that with the addition of certifications (Encase, CCNA, various OS certs) the need to have a Masters in anything computer related would be moot (when combined with a technical bachelors). Thanks in advance!

What are you trying to achieve?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years in your career? 10 years? 20 years? 40 years? 80 years?

I'd like to move into digital investigations full time and also begin to teach. I'd like to continue with the agency I'm with and perhaps move around after a few years once I get some more time and experience under my belt.
