hello all ….
I want to ask a strange question !! I'm sick of hardware data recovery every time i must replace heads and move platters from hdd to another it's boring and take al lot of time !!
is there any hardware ( device ) for reading hdd platters or any think for read any platters !!

It would be a lovely idea but….

Platters are not like floppy disks, there were never designed to be moved, or used outside the very controlled environment of the original drive.
Hard drives are not like floppy disks, which have nice (typically) fixed 512 byte sectors and 96tpi. NB in a past life I developed a system to read over 100 different physical floppy formats with with just 5 physical drives. File systems ran into a few thousand

Hard drives are designed for speed and capacity and not inter changeability. If you have been swapping heads you will have been made aware how critical each version is, and also how critical the decoding firmware is as well.

I gather that SSDs can be even worse, they may have standard hardware memory chips, but the way data is stored is 'varied' and by the time encryption is added it might made hard drives look OK.

IBAS (Data Recovery) in Norway explained to me that they use a specific hardware to read from a harddrive platter as a last recovery option.

But it operates in a cleanroom (which i assume you have) and they probably have proprietary stuff surrounding it and may not be willing to share how it operates. But you can try contacting them and ask for a solution http//www.ibas.no/kontakt/ (Country phone access code is +47)

Every big data recovery company uses universal devices to read platters. However, since they are often self-developed for internal use, there's no market for such devices. A larger number of firms in magnetic or laser-optical sensor technology is able to build them on demand.

… and not even a single (public) verified reference to any of these devices having actually ever been used (successfully) in any real world data recovery ….

Here is an example of the magic device
http//www.guzik.com/product_n.asp?tabindex=2
http//www.guzik.com/products_spinstandv2002.asp

And a nice thesis revolving around the matter (recent enough, i.e. 2013)
http//escholarship.org/uc/item/26g4p84b.pdf

But AFAIK nothing really changed since - say - 2004/2005

http//hosteddocs.ittoolbox.com/CS050704.pdf
(check pages 19-21 of the .pdf) or just read "our" article
http//articles.forensicfocus.com/2011/06/27/recovering-unrecoverable-data-the-need-for-drive-independent-data-recovery/
with just the conclusions.
The "signaltrace" technology seemingly came out as being simply not economically viable

Use the PC-3000 Express complex and donor disks.

Hi
With my limited knowledge
I can claim that such universal device does not exists . It is a technology myth.
Nowadays large capacity drives are having multiple platters precisely aligned (servo) using servo writers in factory. Besides every manufacturer has different design of platters heads , ( even within same manufacturer / model different factories use different preamp and heads)
Each hard disk is unique in terms of adaptives ( defect list and and other tuning parameters) . So it is extremely difficult to do platter transplant.
None of the DR company in the world is having such secret tool neither there will be.
Even if original ROM (onboard drives electronics) is lost or damaged , recovery will become nearly impossible .
It is a technology myth.

Well, not that before making that claim you took like three seconds to click on the given link and see how a spinstand looks like, let alone read how it has servo positioning alright
http//www.guzik.com/product/v2002-spinstand-automation-for-media-testing/

Now whether such device is used by any data recovery company (and actually with some degree of success) it is another thing.

Dear jaclaz
I am in data recovery since 1996 , several peoples and companies have claimed for drive independent recovery but no one has given commercial solution nor they have demonstrated it.
Products made by Guzik you referred are mostly useful for testing to manufacturer .
Can you show me a single example in last 20 years who has achieved such feat ?
Its all theoretical.
I remember in august 2005 Actionfront Data recovery from USA has claimed this and presented white paper .Later this company has been taken over by Seagate.
To recovery few mb data in spinstand method needs terabytes of raw data decoding.
So to recovery data from 8TB modern disk in may be needed to work on exabytes of data and trillions of dollors.
Now tell me who is going to do this exercise and why ?
You must be aware of Seagate has added security in there firmware (locked firmware)
No professional data recovery lab nor equipment manufacturer so far has solution for this .
They have embedded rom in mcu (microcontroller). There is no way you can regenerate /read rom.
So as on today all drives manufactured by Seagate after mid 2016 are NOT RECOVERABLE.
Forget drive independent recovery , even recovery will not be possible from known drives if firmware , rom adaptives are missing.
So all claims in this regards are theoretical only.

The whole point is that we don't know.

Suitable devices do exist, whether they are actually used (with this or that degree of success) for data recovery or not we don't know, all we know is that noone ever published anything definite on the matter.

If you re-read my previous post
https://www.forensicfocus.com/Forums/viewtopic/p=6580431/#6580431
you will see how I was saying that long before you posted.

And BTW, you'll have to make up your mind 😯 , I don't think that with 20+ years in data recovery you can use the "With my limited knowledge" incipit. ?
