I was wondering if anybody else uses these machines for both phone and computer forensics.
I’ve re-installed Windows 7 Pro 64bit recently and I can’t help but feel its under performing,
Model HP Z820 Workstation
Baseboard ID 158B
Serial Number CZC5022LX4
BIOS version 3.90
Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2697 v2 @ 2.70GHz (2 processors)
Enabled Processor Count 48
Total Memory 128 GB
Graphics Card & Driver Quadro K600

Anybody assist……Has anybody any knowledge if it is possible to run XRY and UFED4PC together without any issues - personally I've noticed both adapters require USB2, however both of these devices have Bluetooth adaptors that reside upon the same channel.

Regards
Branko

I've used a Xeon based workstation from the HP Z series before, but found it to be overkill since most software cannot utilise the power of Xeon processors. If you write your own multithreaded applications, these boxes are awesome and totally worth it, especially with a Revodrive or two in RAID == Serious nerdgasm!

As for the XRY and UFED4PC issue you can add a USB2 card in an available motherboard slot if you need too. They are cheap and usually give you 2-4 USB ports each.

MDCR thank you for your comments.
Over the last month or so and still very new to High Tech Crime, I have definitely enjoyed evaluating this new environment to computer technology. I had come to the conclusion that multicore efficiency will vary from program to program, even task to task within a program. If a task is particularly inefficient from a multicore perspective, the faster clock speeds would be a bigger advantage than those with extra cores and slower CPU speeds. With reference to programs such as Encase and UFED, it’s not surprising a particular program, or function within a program, doesn’t come close to harvesting the theoretical performance benefits of the additional cores. Even when a program does effectively split the operation over multiple cores, this will always involve poaching off resources elsewhere.
A program can never be faster than its slowest task \ operation.

With regards to XRY and UFED4PC I’ve added an additional card however the two devices conflict, this was due to both the UFED and XRY adaptors being connected to the same USB channel.

Ahh, got the same PC for UFED 4PC but not XRY, and I'm running on 16 GB of RAM, but it's the same HP Model, the Z820.

I have run, extraction on UFED 4PC, IEF, and AXIOM all at the same time, with no issues, but I'm running on windows 10 pro 64bit. So I would recommend that over windows 7.

Hi all,

I used a number of the Z800, Z820 and Z840 workstations in my previous career in a Police Hi-Tech Crime Unit. The Mobile phone team used Z420s if I recall correctly.

In our university digital forensic lab, we have a large number of well-kitted-out Z640 workstations.

My general experience is that the HP Z series are phenomenal across the board and well worth the investment.

With regards to making the most of their hardware, I could routinely max out both the CPU and RAM in both my Z840 (which was dual-octal Xeon and 64GB RAM) and my Z800 (dual-hex core Xeon and 96 GB RAM) for significant periods of time.

My experience has very much been that the bottleneck is always the HDD, so we used SSDs and Velociraptor type drives to alleviate this.

In-lab several Z820's with GeForce GTX-1080 PCIe for Passware PW cracking. All fine.

I use HP Z 820 too.

64 GB RAM.
Intel Xeon CPU E5-2650V2.

Windows 7 64 Bit

it is ok for now.

Sometimes USB ports crashes.

then we fix it.

Hi

I am using HP Z 820 too.

I have nvidia Quadro k5000 graphic card.

How can I use this graphic card as processor.

On internet I found "cuda" on nvidia's page.

Should I follow steps mentioned there?

is it enough…

I have 64 GB Ram,
16 core processor intel xeon cpu-E5-2650v2

The Xenons mentioned here are old and slow models. See for comparison. The Intel Core i9-10980XE beats them on its head, even using the Xeon in a 2 x CPU configuration. Especially the single thread performance is much higher on the i9.

Not entirely surprising, since the thread is (was) 2016-2017, the i9 came out mid 2019, if I recall correctly, and the i9-10980XE at the end of the year.
