For those of you who are running your own forensics businesses, what marketing approaches have you found most effective? Are expert witness directories like SEAK and ALM helpful?

tracedf,

My primary marketing method is writing and providing Continuing Legal Education ("CLE") courses to attorneys.

In the U.S., most states require attorneys to take CLE classes every year in order to remain licensed attorneys.

I provide the CLE classes in person and via webinar at no charge.

My classes are purely educational with no sales content, so attorney students see me as an expert who can help with the attorneys' cases; oftentimes a single class will lead to multiple projects.

For example, my article hosted here is actually one of my CLE classes https://articles.forensicfocus.com/2017/06/05/an-introduction-to-theft-of-trade-secrets-investigations/

If you PM me with your email address I will send you my various classes as PowerPoint slides with Timing Outlines. You are free to give my classes yourself if you like, as you have provided me with expert advice many times on this site.

I don't run my own business, but similar to what UC shared, over a decade ago, I had my own DF teaching gig on the side. I'd do short presentations for local LE, but the teaching gig was the big seller. Walking through the material built trust with those folks I was working with, and that led (now and again) to actual analysis work.
