Hello All,

I wanted to report that Cellebrite UFED 4PC v. 6.3.1.477 successfully removed the screen lock in place on a client's LG Optimus L90 D415 4G GSM Android version 5.0.2 (carrier = T-Mobile).

Cellebrite provide a cable #521, which allowed for the removal of the screen lock from the phone and then a forensic extraction.

THANK YOU CELLEBRITE!!!!! Your license and annual subscription fee is worth every penny in my opinion.

I appreciate all the work forensic vendors do, but ranking a vendor so high on an issue like this might be a bit unfair.

Did you try on a modem terminal sending an AT%KEYLOCK=0 to this device for unlocking it for free ?! I'm just curios if it would work or not…

Cellebrite is - among others - a top player. Fact.

Cellebrite is - among others - a top player. Fact.

To become a top player, product quality isn't always necessary.

I don't like about Cellebrite is that they want to eliminate their competitors in an unfair way. There are examples in court suits against XRY and Oxygen Forensics in USA.

Everyone who is doing this kind of work knows that perfect forensics software doesn't exist, you should combine as many as you can.

Another example of a "top player". In my country a local distributer sold tens of EnCase liccenses and, according to official informations, police had big problems because they don't have enough PCs which meet the hardware requirements of the EnCase.

Why the distributer didn't sell them three times cheaper X-Ways Forensic which does a good job even on 4GB RAM PCs and has the same quality? Because they don't have finanical interest and X-Way doesn't have a lobby strong enough to represent itself as an 'industrial standard'.

Let's stick to the technical part of the story, if possible )

@UnallocatedClusters could you try what I suggested and give a feedback on the LG service method I posted if it works or not ?!

@RolfGutmann true, no comments there - I just found the original post more or less like firing with a tank on a fly - how great a forensic vendor is using a let's say by now "public" method for opening LG devices )

@Mreza big companies can afford big lobby… this is how modern business works. Unfortunately big lobby doesn't always lead to rational decisions. I fully understand you, when unfair things happen, most of the local forensic professionals feel betrayed (

UC,
You should have expected the backlash. Its just like someone saying that AT&T cellular service rocks! Then you'll get someone that says they stink and Verizon is #1.

Let me tell you about my Cellebrite experience. A few years ago I posted an issue in FF that I was having with a feature phone where Cellebrite would only pull the incoming sms, but not the outgoing sms. Several hours after my post Ron Serber had me perform a file system dump and upload it onto a server. The following day I had a file with both incoming and outgoing sms and Ron indicated they would include this with their next update. This was pretty low level stuff IMO, but it showed their desire to identify and fix any and all issues as soon as possible.

Do you need more than one forensic tool? Yes you do!

Am I frustrated about the cost associated with Cellebrite's CAIS program? Yes!

UC, try sending that code through a modem terminal and see if you can unlock an iPhone 5C?

Most of you on here have forgotten more cellular forensic knowledge than I will ever have, but for my money Cellebrite is a Top Player! If anyone is trying to allege that they are not, or suggest that those selling less than quality products are I believe they do themselves a dis-service.

Hello all,

The LG phone Cellebrite unlocked belonged to a homicide victim; the family of the victim and their attorney hired me to extract evidence from the phone for further analysis.

So, although the victim's family is obviously in a very unhappy situation, I am hopeful my analysis will be able to provide them with some closure (and possibly shed light on the circumstances surrounding her death).

I did not attempt any other methods to remove the screen lock as the Cellebrite technology worked on the first attempt.

UFED4PC also allowed me to create a physical image via a bootloader exploit.

I simply wanted to report to the community that the Cellebrite unlock technology works as advertised in the event another forensic specialist is faced with a screen locked LG D415.

Maybe you were a bit too enthusiastic. roll

Let's make a carpenter's comparison, I bought a Black & Decker electric hacksaw advertised to be able to cut through a 1/2" wooden panel.

I tried to saw a 1/2" wooden panel with that saw and lo and behold, it actually cut through the plywood!

I must say how great is Black & Decker and how good are their saws, they actually work as advertised.

Unlocking screen locked Android phones seems a bit more challenging than sawing wood.

Sure ) , and as a matter of fact the Black & Decker salesman was very honest and did state explicitly to me how the hacksaw could do nothing to unlock an Android phone. wink
