Digital Forensic Laboratory Supervisor

The Greater Manchester Police Digital Forensic Investigation Unit (DIU) is one of the largest and continuously expanding digital forensics teams in the UK, striving to become a centre of excellence for digital forensics. Recently the unit have secured a significant investment to further expand the team to 72 staff and officers over the next 2 years, with the initial expansion focusing on a number of key roles within the team. This expansion is a genuine acknowledgement of the crucial and valuable contribution that digital forensics brings to the modern day police investigation.

In addition to the expansion in resources there are plans in place to re-locate the unit along with colleagues from Forensic Services to a purposely designed facility perfectly located on the outer city M60 ring road, with access to all major routes in and out of Manchester.

The expansion includes a complete re-design of the unit structure, incorporating new management, supervisory, team leader and co-ordination related positions. The uplift also includes increases in technical and investigative positions to further enhance the requirement to support front line policing.

The DIU is looking for driven and motivated candidates to continue this journey and help support policing in an ever-changing technological environment.

This is an exciting opportunity for a technical leadership position, as part of an expanding Digital Investigation Unit team.

In this role you will work alongside unit supervisors and will be responsible for the management of the digital forensic ‘extraction’ functions, with overall responsibility for managing teams of examiners and direct supervisory responsibility for the Senior Digital Forensic Examiners (Lab function team leaders). You will be responsible for the evidence extraction teams that form part of the Digital Investigation Unit, innovating and developing the latest techniques for the extraction of digital evidence.

You will be responsible for supervising the ‘extraction’ functions of the unit which involves the imaging of all storage media, extraction of all mobile phone/devices, cloud account downloads and digital triage. This involves developing and maintaining the technical capabilities of the functions, managing the throughput of work, managing performance and developing the capabilities of the unit and staff in this area.

You will assist in developing technical solutions for assessing risk and will also play a key role in the development of the units’ technical and investigative capabilities as a whole. You will be key in implementing, maintaining and developing quality, performance and ISO standards for extraction functions within the unit.

We are looking for motivated, driven leaders who strive to develop both technical and investigative solutions for the Digital Investigation Unit and GMPs wider digital investigation capability.

You will have extensive experience within the digital forensic sector including experience of forensic ‘imaging’, mobile phone forensics, and the opportunities presented by digital evidence stored within the Cloud. The candidate will have experience of developing new cutting edge techniques in one or more of these areas.

You will have knowledge of maintaining and developing quality standards in relation to digital forensic extraction functions and will have experience of managing various workstreams to a service level set by management.

The ideal candidate will have experience in mentoring (or supervising) staff within a range of functions involving digital evidence extraction.

You will be a proactive individual and have proven ability in implementing change in order to increase the quality and investigative capability within digital forensics.
