DFT currently have a vacancy for 1 Digital Forensic Analyst based at Haywards Heath.

The Role

Digital devices and information communication technology are present in almost every investigation the police undertake. These range from complex corporate computer networks and high capacity server/workstations, to mobile phone handsets, games consoles, digital CCTV systems and satellite navigation.

The increased demand for digital forensic services has resulted in a re-structure of the Digital Forensic Team, (DFT) to transform service delivery and to improve resilience; this includes a growth in posts.

Applications are now invited for the post of Digital Forensic Analyst - Digital Forensic Team within the Sussex Digital Forensic Team, (DFT).

It is an exciting opportunity to play a significant role in a dynamically evolving digital forensic investigations unit, comprising multiple teams which operate across Surrey and Sussex Police.
Key Responsibilities


1 To be accountable for their workload and the delivery of digital forensic examination, analysis and interpretation. To problem solve the complexities of forensically examining and reconstructing data from digital devices.

2 To be responsible for the initial ‘preview’ of exhibits (the initial forensic retrieval of digital data) to ensure that ‘negative’ or ‘no value’ exhibits are eliminated at an early stage.

3 Using specialist software applications together with analytical skills and technical knowledge, interpret the provenance of the evidence found, the user’s activity and interaction and establish the best evidence available.

4 To be responsible for the correct handling of exhibits, maintain continuity and integrity and to ensure that all movements and examinations are fully recorded on appropriate systems for audit purposes.

5 To perform the role of Duty Officer on a rotational basis. Be the focal point of contact for priority cases, liaising with OIC / SIO and to conduct examinations and analysis of devices at short notice. Make themselves available for ‘live-time’ investigations and display flexibility to respond to these enquiries.

6 To prepare digital examination strategies within the required timescales, detailed technical reports and evidential statements following Criminal Justice Processes / Streamlined Forensic Reporting (SFR) principles. This includes attending court and presenting their findings.

7 To act as a point of reference and expertise in respect of digital forensics. To advise Investigators, CPS and other stakeholders regarding digital forensic evidence.

8 To be responsible for mentoring new staff and informing the Team Leaders of their development

9 To conduct examinations within the quality standards framework appropriate for the maintenance of ISO 17025. This includes carrying out peer reviews

10 To attend mandatory courses and to maintain an active working knowledge of changes in technology relating to digital devices (including ‘horizon scanning’) and digital forensic research and development.

11 Maintain technical and behavioural competence to meet the standards required to achieve professional competence in Digital Forensic Analysis.

12 To undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and character of work as may be reasonably required, including specific duties of a similar or lesser graded post.
Skills & Experience

The post is for a fully qualified analyst with experience in Digital Forensics that could hit the ground running. We are looking for people with EnCase, FTK, Macquisition or similar forensic software qualifications as we are not in a position to train someone without these qualifications.

Ideally we are looking for someone with a digital background/experience that understands how the process from seizure to evidence works as well as being ISO 17025 aware.

We are also looking for someone with a knowledge of exhibit handling and processes within a digital forensic environment.

Additional Information

Internal candidates must inform their immediate Line Manager before applying for this post.
As the post holder will be exposed to sensitive and sometimes distressing images / information, candidates will be subject to a psychological assessment check before they begin the role, (and whilst in post). This forms a baseline for further checks but also ensures people are fit to undertake the role at the outset.

Candidates will be vetted to Management Vetting, (MV) level
