Hi experts,

I'm being sent an Alcatel OneTouch 2036X phone for the purpose of text message extraction. It will arrive unlocked so no issues with accessing the phone.

I'm trying to find some information about it before I start work on it, as it looks like its not a smart phone, not android-based operating system, and perhaps more like an old-school Nokia OS?

There's no SD card involved either.

Any thoughts on what sort of tools I'll be needing, techniques to access a developer mode (if there is any), what to expect from this device?

Thanks in advance,
Will

Alcatel has their own OS running on this device. There could be service codes which could give you access to menu entries not visible by default, but I don't know anything which would give you access to more user data related informations.

The device got not Bluetooth and the USB port might be there for charging only.

If the USB has data connection, the general user data can be extracted with mostly any forensic extraction program.

If you can't extract the needed data by some software, use a good quality camera and take pictures.

If you need deleted data also, most probably JTAG/Chip-off is your only choice to acquire a binary image.

This is an SPD based phone, most likely SC7702 and it should be able to make full dump just via USB. Furious supports sim unlocking so it has a working loader. It's possible that Infinity (CM2SPD) or Volcano has one as well. I'd also check any tools supporting Spreadtrum based feature phones.

Check here for boot key to connect it via USB.

@arcaine2 We tried this before, it didn't work, our technician who measured the USB wires voltage told me that only charging was enabled.

@brasskazoo Maybe it is a firmware revision based setting and if arcaine2's idea is working, please post a feedback, if you succeed!

looks like it's supported by Cellebrite and XRY

Generally, I start my search on https://www.digitalforensiccompass.com

Whilst not the be-all-end-all, it's a good place to start

@randomaccess I totally agree, digitalforensiccompass.com is one of the best ways to start with.

I would be happy to hear a feedback about success for this Alcatel OneTouch 2036X extraction.

Great, thanks all for your assistance. It’s given me some good leads - and will checkout digital forensics compass.

I operate only as a software-based extractor as a side-gig, so no off-the-chip (unless the client is willing to outsource), and no Celebrite (my volume of work cant justify the cost). SANS SIFT, Katana Lantern and Wondershare usually have me covered!

I’ll let you know how I go with what I’ve got though )

Hi everyone,

Apologies it took me a while to get back to this thread.

In the end I wasn't able to make headway into the device so I contacted a local forensic lab (actually an accountancy with a forensic department) who were able to perform the extract with Cellebrite. Did it easily, although the text messages are only stored in text files, so extremely limited memory-wise, and absolutely no chance of recovering deleted messages..
