I received a file from Google (with a search warrant) and it has a pdf attachment containing the requested information. When I open it, I get an error message Adobe Reader could not open '*********@gmail.com.Gmail.Content.mbox' because it is either not a supported file or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

The files were provided from google and downloaded.

Is there a free program that can be used to view this type of file?

thanks.

An MBOX isn't a PDF (don't know where the PDF and Adobe reader stuff comes into it).
It's a mailbox and you can open it using most modern forensic tools (or an email client like Thunderbird).

Edit presumably as you mention it's a PDF attachment…then you've been given a copy of either the entire mailbox or a selected item from it (ie email and attachment) rather than a PDF.

Windows MBox Viewer is always my go to for these cases.

@rich2005 Potentially they have the .mbox extension mapped with PDF viewer application somehow... so they probably see the pdf Icon on their UI and think it's a pdf.
