Hello colleagues,
I have iPhone 3G with iOS 3.0.1
I need to extract SMS from the device.
I connect it to the iTunes. But the backup option is grey out. (when I connect iPhone 5 the backup option is avaible)
screen below

iTunes informs me that I can update iOS to version 4.2.
Do I have to do it in order to create the backup ?
Oxygen Forensic Detective successfuly detects the device

but a few seconds later gives me Extraction Fail

What should I do to extract the content of this 10years old phone?
You can create the physical dump of the iphone. It is forensycally sound way.
But why i cannot extract the device via Oxygen ?
I tried also Elcomsoft iOS Forensic Toolkit
Device connected iPhone (hp)
Hardware model N82AP
Serial number 83841WL2Y7H
iOS version 3.0.1
Device ID 18b3acc439a0671d318d40e02783ab3a8231e5b2
Write backup to directory <current directory> e\App
ERROR Could not start service com.apple.mobilebackup2.
Press 'Enter' to continue
The device is unlocked and above error is occured.
With iPhone 5 there is no problem with creating backup
What could be a problem ?
I sure what the problem is very old iOS.
If you want, I will be able to do chip-off of the iPhone for you.
I could update iOS to 4.2 via iTunes but I cannot be sure if updating iOS back then doesnt affect a user data. Someone know this ? Nowadays updating is not a problem but who can be sure how it was 10y ago 0
Dear fellas
Problem solved 8)
I installed old iTunes from 2010 on another PC then connected 3G with iOS 3.0.1 and this time it works. iTunes created backup successfully.
I don't got such an old device now to test it., but I think you can also create a physical dump using the libimobiledevice related programs under linux.
@passcodeunlock thanks for valuable tip.
I will look closer to that libimobiledevice library in a free time
Right now I just needed to extract sms from that iPhone.
