Magnet IEF - Processing Speed

Post Posted: Jan 03, 19 11:58

Question for those of you that use IEF (and I guess Axiom too)....how are you finding the speed?

I ask as it's never been "super-quick" for me running a full search on a drive, but just about "do-able" overnighting things, using weekends etc.....but really it's becoming impractical to even do that anymore.

As an indication of speed it's often between 9MB/s to 13MB/s when searching unallocated.......which obviously results in a VERY long time with modern drive sizes. It's not using anywhere near all the memory and running on SSDs makes little difference so seems to be massively CPU limited which is always maxed out.

Barring throwing massive amounts of CPU power at it (whether via the cloud, if that was an option, or an insanely expensive local machine with an array of CPUs) I'm assuming that's just the way it is now.

So I'm curious as to whether everyone else experiences the same thing (or not) and whether people are doing anything to cope (now just doing less thorough searches etc?).

Axiom is faster. They aren't really working on making ief quicker either, so don't hold your breath for that.

I haven't found it to be that slow but I do have a pretty powerful machine or two to use.

I don't think the upgrade cost from ief to axiom is that much, I think it was only a few extra hundred a year from memory and functionality was much more.
I do find axiom sometimes dies if you store the case on a network though, which I don't see on ief

Interesting. Thanks for the reply.

Edit: <removed my follow up question as Dan's provided enough info to make it redundant now - so no need to reply> Smile

You can get a trial of AXIOM and try it yourself. AXIOM is in a totally different place than what IEF is/was.

See Jad's blogs and write ups below.

Thanks Dan - that's very helpful.

I'd not explored Axiom much (as I have other tools and IEF just was mostly just for the chat/webmail) not knowing that there was such a performance difference rather than functionality difference.

Guess I'm going to have to see how much the upgrade cost is!

Do you have a source for that?
