How can I retrieve windows 10 saved browser passwords. I know that the OS hashes saved passwords with a random generated password. How would one go about this?

Which OS? Which browser? There are a plethora of how-to guides on YouTube if you just want to follow steps and not actually learn about the fundamentals.

I fear Win 10 is an operating system and not a web browser roll

I’m more interested in doing it on a hard drive image. Rather than a live system for chrome browser or edge browser.

OR VM the image, and run the software listed above over the "running system". Doing this over an image file wont work.

The conditions or variables matter here.

1. If you are trying to recover passwords from a live Windows 10 computer for which you know the user's credentials, then there are many ways you can go about it (and there are many tools that can help you). For example, in the projected scenario, if you want to access passwords saved in Chrome, you can force Windows to decrypt the needed data using dpapi (or get a capable tool like Belkasoft to do it for you). Piece of cake!

2. However, if you do not know the user's Windows credentials or if you cannot hijack a live session, then things get quite tricky. Similarly, if you are dealing with an image file, then it takes some time and effort - even if you know the user's credentials, there are only a few tools capable of doing the job. And if you do not have the user credentials, then good luck getting past the encryption system for the Windows password.
