Forensic Images Sharing

Post Posted: Mar 25, 20 09:59

Dear all,

I hope everyone is fine and we can overcome this coronavirus outbreak soon!

Currently, I think a lot fellow forensic examiners are working from home. In addition, we are stopped from travelling to the scenes for seizures and acquisitions. I am in such a situation exactly.

However, there are new cases coming in all the time, and my organization is trying to shift the seizure and on-site acquisition. The problem is how to send the acquired images to the lab with fulll analysis capability. Apparantly, transport the forensic images in person is out of picutre. Also, it is hard to send the secured digital carriers containing images using international delivery service at this time.

I am thinking to adpot cloud service, like Dropbox, to allow field investigators to uplaod acquired images to the cloud space, and then the lab can donwload the images to analysis. However, this remains as an option to test, as usually the forensic images are of hundreads of GBs at least, and the network performance is downgraded because of a heavy usage.

To this end, I would like ask all the fellow practitioners if you have any other thoughts on keeping the business runs.

Many thanks.

I have a solution for you Smile

Amazon AWS has SFTP server available. We are using this service for quite a long time for our customers in the US. Europe is a bit different (mandatory GDPR and a different mindset with regards to data privacy), there we have SFTP servers in our own data center.
Your customers can upload (password protected) images to AWS and you fetch them from there and analyse at home.
aws.amazon.com/sftp/

regards, Robin

Thank you very much for the information, Robin!

I will definitely have a look at AWS service and propose it to our managment.

Take care!
