I just did a presentation for a group of insurance fraud investigators on computer forensics and I had a very interesting question posed from the crowd.
Can any usefull information be extracted from in car navigation systems or even possibly from Onstar ?

Now I image that any Onstar info would be obtained through a subpoena but I would be interested in learning what could possibly be recovered from navigation systems.

It's possible that navigation systems could cache location and speed information the question is, are they on all of the time.

The context of the question was car theft claims

Anyway, I figured that this would be a good item for a general discussion

An interesting question that definitely requires some research.

I know someone who purchased an Acura recently, and the web site describes the navigation system as "the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognitionâ„¢"…that's it.

Peripheral searching for car navigation systems reveals the Sanyo NV-E7000, Pioneer AVIC-88DVD, etc. You'd have to look at each one, see what's available, and maybe even contact the vendor for information about memory, storage formats, etc.
