Not sure how much of the audience finds themselves in IRC on a daily basis but has anyone come across an IRC channel with a topic geared towards forensics / incident response? I'd spend a day looking through the freenode channel list but I'm just not that bored 😉

It seems it would be nice to take part in more dynamic conversations or get questions answered more quickly if they were asked in IRC. Just hadn't come across any forensic channels.

Thanks for any input!

Good idea, not seen any IRC channels myself either. Is it possible to have some kind of dynamic chat facility on the board/site?

I'm in #forensics on Undernet and EFnet (the only channels I could find mentioning forensics on SearchIRC.com) and they're both very dead and the only mention of forensics has been in the topic 🙁

Let me know if anyone finds anything please 🙂
Thanks!

I set up a Yahoo Group specifically for the discussion of forensic analysis of Windows systems; Windows Forensic Analysis.

Traffic has been slow, I'll admit. Some of it's my fault, as initially I was maybe a little overzealous with the moderation…but I'm trying to really develop a useful resource, and not fill up the group with "me, too" and "I'm drunk/high/hungover" posts. Also, the vast majority of the members joined with nothing to contribute and no questions to ask…

Not sure if this is the right place for me to reply to that comment keydet89 (i'm a member of the list and group) but in my personal opinion the scope of contribution seems narrow or the bar seems high, not sure, just the feel of it. Seems like the group isn't even made for questions, it's made for significant contributions to the community dealing directly with windows forensic analysis. Not sure about everyone else but revelations in that arena don't happen everyday for me 😎

Not that anything can be done about this on your part, I appreciate the lightening up on moderation, it's just my .02. When I feel my contributions would make the cut for the group, i'll be more than eager to share.

tebodell,

You'll have to excuse me for saying so, but I think your interpretation of the group is pretty narrow minded. Yes, the subject matter is narrow, but that's for two reasons…one is that this subject really isn't treated in any significant way in any other resource.

As far as the group being made for questions…well, all I can say is that there have already been several questions asked, with responses posted. After all, most significant contributions start with a question.

For example, someone posted just today asking where MSN Messenger passwords are stored in the Registry. That was a question, and I think a pretty significant one.

As far as making contributions…well, that's up to you.

I have been looking for an IRC channel for forensic focus as well as general forensics but did not find any.

So I thought I could wait but then I thought I could just create one.

I created the channel ##ForensicFocus (As its not an official Forensic Focus Channel)

I thought it would be a good place for members to talk in real time, granted timezone permitting

it is hosted on holmes.freenode.net

Lets see if this is of use to the community or if IRC is just not what I remember it to be.
