What kind of issues could occur with data stored on a Blackberry if it is left in storage for a long time?

From my research, it doesn't appear that anything should be lost, because it is stored in non-volatile flash memory.

Any insights?

Yes the data is stored in non volatile memory but policy settings for Blackberries connected to a BES can delete old messages. I would recommend doing the examination in an RF free room/container to prevent this (and a kill command from being executed as well). At the very least remove the SIM card from the BB before you power it up and then turn off the unit's radio.

FYI if it is a CDMA (Verizon, Sprint, etc.) BB there is no SIM card except in the 8830WE model that handles both GSM and CDMA (and then there is a SIM only for users that have purchased it as an option).
