Questions for all (but especially for Kovar),

Kovar - you mentioned you put a truecrypt volume on your collection drives prior to heading out into the field.

Do any of you guys use TrueCrypt (or any other encryption mechanism) on your collection drives and how does it measure up in relation to data transfer speeds ? Do you find that having the images encrypted and secured out weigh any reduction in write speed ?

Also do you reuse the same drives over again, using TrueCrypt to sanitise the space or do you purchase a new set of collection drives every time you head out ? - just wondering in relation to long term storage and drive numbers whether storing actual collection drives (plus backup) or transferring the images onto a nas/san would be preferable ?

Thanks,
Ian

IanF,
I use TrueCrypt on our portable 1.5TB collection drives. They are all eSata drives so I don't notice any slow down. I do use the same drives over and over again however they all get cleanly wiped on a rotational basis.

The biggest benefit to havening a TC container is you can maintain separation between images on a multi image case. Imagine 10, 80 GiB drive images from different custodians. one container for each or, 5, 80 GiB drives from one site in one container and 5 from another in a different one on the same case.

With the right hardware the speed difference is negligible.
