Taking into consideration a "normal" user, that probably has more or less 500GB HDD SATA2, which would be the fastest way to wipe the HDD ?
* HDD Wipe Tool
* Boot and Nuke
* Secure Erase Utility (not updated anymore I think)
* Other suggestions ?
I've never wiped a 500gb HD, so in your professional opinion/experience, how much would it take to finish ?
Greetings,
The hardware will play a bigger role in speed than the software, and at some point you'll be IO bound by the disk.
If you really must wipe it very quickly, a hardware imaging/wiping solution will probably be your best route.

You will also need to decide if a single wipe is fine, or if you require 327 wipes +/- 2 depending the phase of tne moon
The software on an industrial chipper/shredder set on fine seems to work well.
Insert hard drive in kitchen oven.
Turn kitchen oven to self clean mode.
Return in 1 hour.
Drive size does not matter. As a matter of fact, this solution can do parallel processes, solely depending on space and sufficient ventilation within the oven.
Some 'blenders' depending on the drive casing, can do the same in a fraction of the time, but can only process 1 drive at a time.
. . . Oh . . . Did you actually wanted to use the drive after wiping?

You sir have been watching too many late nite infomercials.
My current software wiping solution will fill a 500GB Seagate 7200.12 drive with 0x00 in less than 90 minutes. That's on the lastest generation of drives of course, so for a slower drive your mileage will vary.
