I've been doing some digging, and am trying to locate any Computer Based Training (CBT) for digital forensics. They can be web-based or stand alone systems, but completely automated (no human support/instructor/mentor or human grading - so no distance education courses). I am compiling a list, and will post my finding after getting some feedback.

It doesn't matter if you have used the programs or not, but if you have, your feedback on it would be valuable as well.

For starters

Basic Forensics Training CD-Rom / CBT

http//www.cbtplanet.com/security-training-network-courses/basic-forensics-training-cbt-cdrom-course.htm

The Basic Forensics Computer Based Training CBT course outlines the procedures necessary to conduct a forensic investigation. The course introduces the various phases of a forensic investigation including how to identify an incident, incident response, collection of evidence, chain of custody and evidence admissible in court. 3 hours. Cost 399.00

Computer Forensics First Responders Training

http//www.cyberevidence.com/forensics_online_training.asp

This forensics course is focused on training Law Enforcement and IT specialists on computer crime scene chain of custody and evidence preservation techniques. Target students are line officers or field investigators that may be faced with seizing electronic devices or corporate IT security professionals helping with a fraud investigation or incident response action. Cost 80.00

Thanks,

bj

SANS has a very good online course, with downloadable video & CBT content. A very respected training & certification organisation.

See http//www.sans.org - GIAC Certified Forensics Analyst

Also check out CERT's Virtual Training Program - http//vte.cert.org - some content is free, or you can pay a premium for access to all content & CPE's

Regards,

BJ,

Have you had any other luck finding further CBTs? I can't believe that there are only that many CBTs out there to address computer forensics. Hmmm…

Not trying to blow my own horn or plug my video, but the Virtual Training Company (www.vtc.com) just put out a "Introduction to Computer Forensics" video co-authored by myself and Brad Causey. The list cost is only $99.00 (US), which is a decent price compared to most other comparable training videos, and covers a wide range of material geared towards the beginner or intermediate-level forensics technician. There are sample videos online at their site to view if you like before you buy. In an effort to be somewhat humble, I think it's a quality video that would be very helpful to anyone trying to learn the subject. We're also releaseing an Advanced Computer Forensics video with VTC sometime before the end of the year. Please check it out.

BJ,

I'll check out the VTE site. A more advanced CBT would be excellent as well. CBTs are a great vehicle to learn from.

Keep up the good work.

Oops, sorry Berogersjr that was meant for you.

I have another post in this same forum regarding the availability of sample hard, floppy or USB drive images to analyze. I think that may be something that would work well into your CBTs. If you could incorporate the image that you use in the video/dvd into the products website, then people could download the image and analyze it along with you on the CBT.

Being very new to this field I've found it hard to find good hands on practical learning material. Without the hands on learning I find myself memorizing things rather than learning them.

We actually do have some sample images and case studies on the CD for analysis, as well as live demonstrations of the various tools you can use. Additionally, there are some places online (NIST and a few others) that put out sample images that you can download and practice on.

I'm looking forward to the CBTs then. Thanks for the heads up.

I've done CBT searches for comp forensics and had only a few hits so you're filling a much needed niche!
