There's a number of free online sites that do this (their queues are usually pretty long, but maybe not longer than you're talking about.)

Anyone can do this – if they have the cpu cycles – they can generate their own rainbow tables, and if not, they can download them from a variety of websites for many different hash types. I don't see a reason for you to have to volunteer your system given the options available to people.

koko,

I can only remember the big one that's still up – as I see no reason to use them – it's far nicer to have the rainbow tables yourself

http//www.plain-text.info

I'm sure some good googling would help out with more sites.

What about the liabilty of submitting somebody's hash to a free site - not worth it to me. I'd rather do it myself.

Use John with some patches and generate or buy the rainbow tables for the more complex hashes.

I'm not sure about the actual liability, considering it's anonymous, and the key alone means nothing, and anyone with access to the drive/whatever to use the key would have access to the hash, and could crack it themselves … so forth … but, I understand the argument.

Moral of the story do it yourself
